Sarah Boo Brantley is our awesome Woman Crush Wednesday!
We find our work in the beauty industry to be extremely rewarding, and thanks to Sarah Boo and her non-profit ETTA, many more are now set up with the right tools to find success in this amazing industry! She has been a pioneering force in Washington state, promoting the time-tested apprenticeship method of beauty licensure. Sarah is the classroom instructor for the Beautifully Polished apprenticeship program, and works with numerous other salons around the state. This low-cost, on the job style of training has proven to be one of the best ways to pursue a career in the beauty industry, without taking on tens of thousands of dollars in debt, and all the while learning which skills are most in demand in your specific location. Beauty schools teach a generic curriculum, which do not account for local trends, and they also neglect to focus on the business prowess required to realize success. On average, it will take a newly licensed hairdresser 10 years to pay off his or her student loan for beauty school, and that assumes a healthy clientele base. Within five years of getting licensed, a whopping 78% of beauty school graduates will no longer be in the industry, having found the student loan debt to be crippling enough to require other employment.
Sarah Boo aims to change all this. Sarah’s love and appreciation for her industry goes all the way back to her grandmother, who passed down her own knowledge and wisdom to Sarah. Her grandmother knew that the beauty industry is one that will weather the ups and downs of the economy, and that it will always be important and relevant. But not all beauty industry professionals have had the luxury of this kind of insight. Now, Sarah is passing it on to anyone serious about making the beauty industry a career. Maybe that’s you!?
